We end the year on a high note for Specialism, as this week our application for redesignation has been approved by the Department for Education. It means that funding is secure for the next three years.

Having completed 5 years as a specialist school, the process for redesignation of the school’s specialism began in May. The new criteria for redesignation were announced in April 2010 and members of the specialism team worked hard to complete the necessary paperwork and gather evidence. On 24th June Janeen Parker, School Improvement Partner for the Minster School, carried out her redesignation evaluation and visit. She met with senior staff, all members of staff from the specialism curriculum areas, students, and a community partner, Andy Gregory from Southwell Town Council and the Royal British Legion. Janeen recommended the school for redesignation, this was moderated by the Local Authority, and the final decision made by the Department for Education.

During the summer holiday the school computer network will be upgraded allowing staff and students who use Windows Vista or 7 Operating Systems to access school files from home.

Unfortunately this will cause some inconvenience as access to school files and email over the summer break will not be possible.

Students have recieved a letter about this and a copy can be read by clicking here.

Parents/Carers will also need to know that the school email system will not be available between 9th - 14th August 2010. We apologise for any delay in replying to those who email the school during this period.

Lowdham Book Festival

Now in its second year, the Lowdham Festival Sixth Form Short Story Competition attracted a number of high quality entries. Competitors were asked to create an original story of no more than 750 words revolving around ‘green’ issues, conservation and the environment. Futuristic dystopias were a common theme but in several cases a bleak outlook was leavened by a sense of humour.
