The Minster School is designated as a specialist centre for Humanities and Music and, because of their individual talents, the students in the Junior School make a significant contribution to the celebration of music. The special advantage of the Junior School is in the musical atmosphere which pervades the department. To enhance their National Curriculum Music, students have choral and orchestral sessions each week and time is given to aural training and music theory. Singing is an essential and obligatory feature of life in the Junior School and all students sing in the main choir.

Instrumental music tuition is offered to enrich and extend our students’ musical experiences. We are fortunate to receive the services of 9 qualified and experienced instrumental teachers from Nottinghamshire’s Arts Support Service, covering upper and lower stringed instruments, brass, woodwind, guitar, keyboard and percussion. Both high quality instrumental tuition and coaching for school ensembles ensure that the tuition provided matches the high standards demanded of a school known for the excellence of its music making. All students are given the opportunity to take music examinations, both practical and theory.

Any student attending the Junior School receiving tuition will have free tuition for one instrument only. If tuition for two instruments is required then an account will be rendered each term for the second instrumental tuition charge. When students leave the Junior School they will stop receiving free tuition and will be billed each term under the current terms and conditions of the instrumental tuition scheme. Free instrumental loan may be possible from a range of instruments provided by the Arts Support Service and the school. An application form can be downloaded here.

Students are expected to participate in appropriate extra-curricular activities during their time at school, both in the Junior School and in the main school. The Junior School has its own instrumental group and mixed choir; more advanced players are able to join instrumental groups in the main school such as the Concert Band, String Orchestra, flute and clarinet groups and the Senior Orchestra. The Choristers have extra practices out of school hours and are required to attend some services during the week. The school provides late buses on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday to enable our students to participate in a range of extra curricular activities.
