Year 10 Battlefields Study Visit

Feb. 14 - 16, 2018

We are planning to take the Year 10 GCSE History students on an intensive 3 day visit to the Western Front. We believe that the proposed visit will be of great value to our students, particularly with regard to the World War l topic studied as part of Unit 1.

The visit will take place on Wednesday 8th to Friday 10th February 2017. We will leave school at 4.30am on the Wednesday and return at approximately 10.30pm on the Friday. Travel will be by coach and ferry.

As these times are outside the normal school day parents and carers will need to arrange alternative transportation.

We will visit sites in and around the town of Ypres on day one. This will include the town of Ypres, the In Flanders Fields museum, Essex farm cemetery, memorials and the Menin Gate. The following day we will travel south into France to the Somme Battlefield and we will visit two battlefield sites, Vimy Ridge and Newfoundland Park to see remains of trench systems, visit Lochnager Crater, the results of one of the underground mines exploded during the Somme attack, and also the Thiepval memorial to the missing. We will return to Ypres in the evening and attend the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate. On the Friday we will visit other sites around Ypres including Tyne Cot, Langemarck and Talbot House before returning to the UK.

Accommodation for both nights will be in the Chateau d’Ebblinghem Hotel located around 45 minutes away from Ypres, and will be on a full board basis.
