School Direct offers schools the chance to select and train their own outstanding teachers of the future.

School Direct offers schools the chance to select and train their own outstanding teachers of the future. The commitments are (briefly) as follows:

Minster School Teaching Alliance

  • Allocate places for School Direct to partner schools
  • Assist in the advertising, interview and selection process of trainees
  • Provide access to a co-ordinated programme of support for trainees
  • Provide mentor training
  • Agree with the partner school which colleagues will mentor trainees

School Offering a School Direct Place

  • Provide support and capacity to the mentor
  • Consider carefully the School Direct places offered as part of wider staffing issues (the Department for Education anticipates that, over time, most School Direct trainees will be employed on a permanent basis within the Alliance)
  • Ensure that trainees are placed within curriculum areas or key stages where they will have the opportunity to work alongside and learn from outstanding teachers
  • A willingness to provide opportunities for School Direct trainees from other schools in the Alliance to visit your school for short placements

The Mentor

  • Hold a weekly mentor meeting with the trainee
  • Provide weekly feedback on the trainee’s teaching
  • Complete the relevant assessments required by the University partner

HE Partner

  • Screen applicants prior to school-based interview
  • Provide academic support and tutoring (an average of one day per week through the year).
  • Assess trainees through assignments and observations of teaching
  • Provide accreditation for the award of PGCE status
