Dear Parents and Carers,

As a part of our induction programme, we plan to take all Year 7 students on a one-night, two-day residential visit to Walesby Forest Outdoor Activity Centre, near Ollerton, Nottinghamshire.

The aim of this visit is for students to get to know each other, their House Leaders, the leadership team and some of their teachers through a variety of shared experiences. Each house will visit as a separate group and will be accompanied by staff from the school and Walesby Camp for the duration of the visit. Our Year 11 House Captains will also be supporting the visit on Day 1 to help to build relationships with our younger students.

During the visit, students will take part in outdoor adventure-style team-building activities in mixed groups. These include rock climbing, orienteering, a low ropes obstacle course and canoeing and kayaking at the lake. Throughout both days, the group will also take part in House activities and games. In the evenings, the whole group will take part in a ‘Twilight’ group campfire with games and songs.

Students will be staying in lodges overnight. They will be accommodated in rooms with bunk beds and students will need to take their own bedding (i.e. sleeping bag or duvet and pillow). Several members of staff will be staying in each lodge to accompany the group. Meals will be cooked and provided at Walesby, but students will need to bring a packed lunch for the first day. Students will travel to Walesby by coach from school, leaving at 9.00 am on Day 1 (after the arrival of our buses) and returning by 3.00 on Day 2 (in time for students to travel home on their school bus if this is their normal route of travel).

Students do not need any specialist equipment, but will need to pack several changes of warm outdoor clothing (including an outfit that may get wet), a weatherproof coat and footwear that is appropriate for outdoor activities (e.g. trainers). Please do not purchase new clothes for the visit – old clothes which can get very muddy and wet are most suitable. Students will also need plastic bags to put wet/dirty clothes in, a towel, nightwear and toiletries for their visits. A kit list with more information will be shared with all students in September.

The dates for the visit are:

Clumber House: Monday 25th – Tuesday 27th September 2022

Rufford House: Tuesday 27th – Wednesday 28th September 2022

A link has been sent to families by email to access our payment system ParentMail,  if you are having difficulty accessing this, please contact  If your child is in receipt of free school meals you may be entitled to a remission of some or all of the cost of this visit. Please contact if this applies.

Please also complete the Parental Consent form (EV4) via this LINK. Please contact us if there is any change in medical or other circumstances prior to the visit.

We do our best to ensure that we do not over-charge for school trips, as it is not the school’s intention to make a profit. But in the event of this trip making a profit we will not be making refunds of less than £10 per student, unless specifically requested by parents. We have had to make this decision because of the administrative costs of refunding small amounts of money to large numbers of students. Any profit made on school trips will be placed in a reserve fund and used solely for the benefit of the students of the school.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Please note that payment and EV4 cannot be accepted on the day of the trip. The payment date must be adhered to.

Our school has an active twitter account which is updated almost daily with information about activities that our students are undertaking. This will be updated throughout the week with photographs and information from Walesby. Please do follow our school twitter account (@minster_school) to learn more about the work that we do.

The location of the camp is close to school and allows us to support students with additional needs on the residential camp. If you feel that your child has particular needs which must be met in order to help them to access this visit, please let us know so that we can make the necessary arrangements. We will be available at the induction event to deliver more information and to discuss any specific needs.

Yours faithfully,

Mr J Brookes
